Nylon 12 Injection Molding Resin Manufacturers

Nylon 12, or Polyamide 12 (PA12), is a high-performance thermoplastic material widely used in various industries. Several manufacturers worldwide produce it, each offering its specific trade name for the material.

PA12 injection molding applications

Nylon 12 is a versatile thermoplastic. When it comes to injection molding with PA12, the key applications include:

  • Automotive Industry: fuel lines, air brake systems, cable ties, fuel filters, and other under-the-hood components
  • Medical Devices: surgical instruments, medical tubing, and components for wearable devices.
  • Electrical and Electronics: connectors, plugs, switches, and housing for electrical and electronic components
  • Sports Equipment: ski boots, bicycle parts, and other outdoor equipment.
  • Consumer Goods: eyewear frames, cosmetic containers, toothbrush bristles, and kitchen appliances
  • Industrial Components: gears, bearings, and seals
  • Aerospace Industry: interior components and wire insulation
  • Oil & Gas Industry: pipes and tubes
Please note that the use of PA12 can vary depending on the specific grade of the material. Some grades are designed to be more flexible, others more rigid. Some have enhanced flame resistance, and others might be optimized for better impact resistance. Therefore, it’s essential to select the appropriate grade of PA12 based on the specific requirements of the application.

Benefits of PA12 injection molding

  • Excellent Mechanical Properties: tensile strength around 45 – 80 MPa. Elongation at break between 200% – 300%. Heat deflection temperature can range from 150°C – 175°C. High  melting temperature around 178°C – 186°C.
  • Low Moisture Absorption: around 0.15% – 0.25% (24hrs/23°C)
  • Specific Gravity: about 1.01 – 1.08 g/cm³
  • Chemical Resistance: many types of chemicals, including oils, fuels, and many solvents.
  • Good Electrical Properties: high dielectric strength, generally around 30 – 40 kV/mm
  • Flammability: PA12 can have a UL94 flammability rating of V-2 or better

PA12 Injection Molding Cost

There are lots of Nylon injection molding manufacturers in China. The cost from different Nylon injection molding suppliers is different. The price mainly depends on raw material cost, tooling cost, cycle times, production volume, and secondary operations. If you want to get the accurate tooling and unit part price, it is better to send the RFQ.

peek injection molding tolerances

Tight tolerances with PEEK injection molding requires a combination of proper part geometry, mold design, precise tooling, and optimal processing conditions. We have to consider shrinkage, warpage, and cooling rates to ensure the desired tolerances are maintained throughout the production. In some cases, secondary operations, such as CNC machining or surface finishing, may be required to achieve tighter tolerances if necessary.

Part Design

  • Wall Thickness: The recommended wall thickness for PA12 parts is typically between 1.2mm and 3mm, but it can depend on the part size, design, and specific application.
  • Ribs and Gussets: The thickness of the ribs should typically be about 50-60% of the wall thickness to avoid sink marks.
  • Corners and Transitions: Use rounded corners and smooth transitions wherever possible. The radius of the corner should typically be about 50% – 70% of the wall thickness.
  • Draft Angles: The recommended draft angle for PA12 parts is typically 1-2 degrees, but it can depend on the part geometry and surface finish.
  • Holes and Bosses: Use cores or inserts to create holes instead of designing them directly into the part.
  • Threads: If the part requires threads, consider using thread inserts or designing them to be post-molded to ensure the best performance and longevity. If threads must be molded into the part, ensure they have adequate draft to facilitate ejection.

Injection Mold Design for PA 12

  • Tooling steel: Mainly depends on the mold life and surface requirement. H13, P20, or S136 are often used due to their hardness, toughness, and thermal conductivity.
  • Shrinkage and Warpage: Shrinkage is 0.5% – 1.5% depending on the specific grade and the processing conditions. This low shrinkage rate contributes to PA12’s excellent dimensional stability. The low water absorption of PA12 can help reduce warpage compared to other types of nylon material.
  • Gate and Runner Design: Sub-gates or edge gates are commonly used for PA12 injection molding. The runner system should be designed to minimize pressure drop and ensure balanced filling. For large-scale production, a hot runner system can be beneficial. It maintains the PA12 in a molten state within the runners, reducing material waste and improving cycle times.
  • Cooling system:
  • Venting system:
  • Ejection system:

It is important to find a reliable mold manufacturer and injection molder. This ensures that you get the best Nylon 12 injection molding solution.
